Senator Abetz was chosen to fill a Senate vacancy on 22 February 1994. He was subsequently sworn into the Senate on 23 February 1994 and made his first speech in the Senate on 14 March 1994. He was re-elected on 3 October 1998.

He leads the Liberal Party's Senate Ticket for the forthcoming election


Senator Abetz, born in 1958, is married with three children and resides at Kingston in Tasmania.


Prior to entering Parliament he was State President of the Tasmanian Division of the Liberal Party for three and a half years from 1990-94 and practiced as a Barrister and Solicitor in the legal partnership of Abetz, Curtis and Docking for seven years from 1987-94.


Senator Abetz was educated at Moonah Primary School, Blackmans Bay Primary School, Taroona High School, Hobart Matriculation College and the University of Tasmania where he graduated with an Arts Degree in 1978 and a Law Degree in 1981. He was admitted as a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Tasmania on 29th August, 1983 and admitted to the High Court of Australia in 1986 and became a Commissioner of the Supreme Court of Tasmania in 1987.


Senator Abetz is the first and only Tasmanian to be elected Federal President of the Australian Liberal Students' Federation and served this term from 1980-81; he is also the only life member of the Tasmanian University Liberal Club and is also a life member of the Australian Liberal Students' Federation.


Senator Abetz has served as Chairman of the Senate Legal and Constitutional Affairs Legislation Committee (3.3.1997 – 9.11.1998) and as the Chairman of the Joint Statutory Committee on Native Title and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Land Fund (19.6.1996 – 4.6.1997). Senator Abetz has also served as Chairman of the Attorney-General and Justice Government Members' Committee.


Senator Abetz was appointed to the Howard Government's second Ministry as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Defence in December 1998 and promoted to the position of Special Minister of State on the 30th January, 2001.

He represents the Minsters for Employment & Workplace Relations and Small Business & Tourism in the Senate
